Each day, I’d make a cup of tea in the mess and take a glimpse outside of the small, round window. Today’s view left me stunned. We’d arrived in Olden and what a contrast it was to Bergen! It reminded me of a hobbit village from The Lord of the Rings. (Maybe the window added some effect for that too!)
My first opinion was that it was a much quieter place with a slight chill in the air, however this didn’t distract me from the views. High mountains enclosed all around me – there was greenery everywhere. Through the mountains, the sea remained still like a sheet of glass. I was waiting for a fish to take a breath to cause some ripples, but it was just so still! I’d never seen anything like it.
All aboard the tour bus, I was ready to visit some of the local sights of Olden…
Detached houses were dotted everywhere; their structures typical of the modern wooden hut. Some with boats for kayaking.
We drove for around 15 minutes before our first stop. Here there was a sound of gallons of water gushing down the stream – very pretty to look at, but fatal if you happened to end up in there. I took a few snaps, well maybe quite a few as it was stunning! Then it was back onto the bus for the next stop…
A further 15 minutes along the road was our second stop at a lake with a glacier in the background. Similarly, the lake was peaceful-looking, yet this time you could hear a pin drop! I did wonder if anything actually lived beneath the water it was that quiet. In the distance was a monstrous glacier which was crawling down the mountain. Completely stunning to look at.
Sadly, after this it was time to head back to the ship and get ready for work. I was glad to be out of the cold, after all I wasn’t used to wearing a coat in the height of the British Summer!
To summarise, Olden was absolutely stunning. Breathtaking views and so tranquil. Another beautiful port ticked off the list!
