Mykonos, Greece šŸ‡¬šŸ‡·

There are many memories why the Summer of 2017 was the ā€˜best Summer yet’. I decided to start writing my blog long after I’d found my sea legs. However, I couldn’t not share with you my memories of Mykonos.

With the luxurious six week holidays approaching, it was time to embark on my first-ever long voyage around the Mediterranean. I’d be aboard the Oceana (a mid-sized ship) travelling to five different countries in total: Malta, Albania, Italy, Croatia and Greece. Within these countries, the ship would visit a plethora of towns and cities – too many to write about! Except one. Mykonos…

All Greek islands are beautiful. You’re almost guaranteed blue skies, warm seas and a temperature that is guaranteed to give you a glow – especially if you visit in the height of the Summer. It was the Greek island of Mykonos which had me captivated by its beauty.

Situated within the Aegean Sea, Mykonos was just another island to me at first. Little did I know that with its popular nightclubs, designer shops and historical heritage, it would be a hotspot of elegance – an island where simplicity met glamour.

My journey onto the island began with a water taxi. It doesn’t sound anything special, but I was sat on the top deck, gazing out towards the island, with the wind blowing through my hair and my sunglasses on – It definitely had that ā€˜Hollywood’ feel. And all for 2 euros! Bargain! You could also see that there was an element of wealth to the island. There were a selection of privately-owned yachts; all lined up to perfection and floating elegantly in the bay with cliche names such as ‘Delia’ or ‘Destiny’. You did wonder who they belonged to! A footballer? Simon Cowell? Perhaps there would be magazine paparazzi in the area! Quick, sunglasses and lippy on!

Along the bay were restaurants and bars bustling with tourists; each selling a range of fresh fish and meats. Combinations of aromas infused the bay which immediately alerted your sense of smell. The temptation to resist was too difficult and so I sampled a traditional Greek dish!

As I wondered into the centre of the island, it soon became a labyrinth of white, narrow walkways and hand-painted, cobbled streets. Everywhere you looked were buildings coated in a pure, white gloss which glistened in the sun. There was even a Mykonos equivalent of London’s Oxford Street! Shop till you drop – anywhere in the world!

Tucked away, high upon the hills were the windmills of Mykonos. Not only a popular tourist attraction and photo opportunity, but an iconic, historical feature of the island since the 16th century. Perfectly placed for a beautiful view too.

As I strolled back down to the water limousine, (taxi!) it was time to head back to work. One last trip across the sea with the wind blowing through my hair – oh you can dream of the glamorous world!
